Water lies at the core of climate change adaptation. Climate change is increasing stress on water resources, as shifting precipitation patterns, rising temperatures, and deteriorating water quality intensify water scarcity and reduce overall water availability. Prolonged droughts, floods, and extreme events further exacerbate these challenges, underscoring the urgent need for effective and resilient water management.
In this context, water management decisions must be made based on robust scientific information and evidence. Science-based approaches enable the identification and implementation of sustainable solutions, such as reducing water demand and pollution, promoting water recycling and reuse, and improving irrigation efficiency. These approaches strengthen adaptive management, enhance resilience, and support long-term climate change adaptation.
Issue No. 5 of the Global Water Security Issues (GWSI) Series focuses on Water Management for Climate Change Adaptation: Making Science-Based Decisions. Through eight chapters, this issue presents practical experiences and applications of multidisciplinary approaches to water management, highlighting policy implementation processes and participatory decision-making. The case studies provide insights into addressing a wide range of water challenges, including the depletion and degradation of water bodies, droughts and floods, and uncertainties associated with climate change and natural disasters.
By emphasizing the role of science in decision-making, GWSI5 explains how sustainable water management can serve as a foundation for building climate adaptation and resilience. The issue offers valuable guidance for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders seeking evidence-based strategies to improve water governance and respond effectively to the impacts of climate change.
